Societies for the Win: Get Involved!

by Staff Reporter

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Being a member of a society or club takes time and commitment.  So why bother signing up?  Emmeline takes a look at the benefits of getting involved – there are more than you may think.

Balancing extra-curricular activities with school work may seem like a mission.  I used to believe it was a juggling act that was not worth the effort.  Why would a person, in their right mind, take on this responsibility?  Ain’t nobody got time for that.

I confess: my opinion on clubs and societies was based on huge assumptions and not giving society signups the time of day.  Until my friend convinced me to try something new: Such. A. Good. Move.  I got involved in a dance society at my school and experienced the benefit of society involvement first-hand.

So, Whats the Point?

In all honesty, there are way more reasons to be involved in societies than excuses not to be. For serious. Here are some advantages that come with getting involved in societies:[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]One of the biggest benefits of being involved in a society is learning to manage your time and prioritise.  As strange as it seems, having more commitments will help to improve your time management skills.  Trust me.  You’ll have less time to procrastinate and more time to focus on getting the important tasks done first. It is vital to develop these soft skills, as they will stand you in good stead throughout your life. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Each society has something different to offer so you’re sure to find a club that’s of interest to you.  Developing your interests outside the classroom is a big deal.  It gives you an opportunity to find out if an interest could become a career.  There’s also the chance to explore various interests.  This can help you discover more about yourself as an individual.  Finding your passion or developing a set of diverse interests is an important part of society involvement.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There’s no denying that societies are hotspots for picking up new friends.  You can hang out with people who have similar interests to you and build cool, meaningful relationships. Getting to know people from different social groups is part of the society vibe. Yes, societies are actually a great source of fun.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Upping your skills level in a society is a thing.  You can develop professional skills such as leadership, team work, management and delegation.  Depending on the society you are involved in, you can find yourself learning completely new skills, without even knowing it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Being a part of a society is like being part of a family – you have a sense of belonging.  Societies give you the opportunity to commit your time to something you value.  You are guaranteed to gain the sense of achievement that comes with contributing to a team.  Having society membership also teaches you the importance of commitment.  Hash tag life lessons.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The Early Bird

The value of society involvement is super under-rated.  Societies will help you define your interests.  I felt the impact of personal growth and development during my involvement in the dance society.  My one regret is not joining the society sooner.  The earlier you can get involved, the better.  You’ll have more time to grow, identify your interests and develop skills.  This is such a cool way to grow and develop an understanding about yourself.  Having a solid idea of what you’re passionate about can help you avoid a panic attack over what to do after school.  Who knew societies could be so valuable?

ICESA is an institution at which you can explore the interests you have developed.  They offer a variety of different courses that cater to many interests.  You will be able to further your education in practically any area of interest.  Whether your passion is found in music, numbers or food, there is a course that will allow you to pursue your interest.  Having a qualification in something that you’re passionate about ensures you will be dedicated to your studies and have the chance to work in an industry you enjoy.  This is the career dream.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
