Summer is on its way and those long lazy days of sun, sand and relaxation are almost here! However, being a student does not always equal spending lots of money. Let’s face it – you need entertainment and things to do during your University breaks. We have compiled a list of 15 things to do in Cape Town that are fun and easy on the pocket!
1. See the Stars
For only R10 entrance fee with your student card, the Iziko Planetarium will have you seeing the celestial sights as you make your way through the planetarium and onto the museum for a mind blowing experience. And bonus, there is an awesome restaurant at the Mount Nelson up the road, for those of you who want to treat your taste buds to some serious lunch in style!

2. View from the Top
A must do in the Summer! The Red City bus will take you all over Cape Town to see our mother city as you never have before! Tickets are R150 and only R130 when you buy online. Catch some sun while you feast your eyes on the beauty that surrounds us.

3. Treasure Hunt in Cape Town
Grab your mates and book a treasure hunt at Hint Hunt found at the Old Biscuit Mill! Your mission is the following (should you accept it): R129, one hour, a room and a race to crack the clues and get out as fast as you can! You and 4 of your friends will get a puzzle to solve and only when you solve all the clues can you escape! This is some seriously crazy, adrenalin packed fun – so come prepared.

4. Grab a cuppa tea
Gather the girls and go enjoy some of the famous delights at the Mount Nelson Hotel for morning or high tea. For R175 you can treat your taste buds to 6 types of aromatic teas and lick your lips off at mouth watering lemon meringue or dark indulgent chocolate cake while you dine in first class style.

5. Take a Hike
This is one of our favourites as it not only offers breath taking views, but it’s also free! Get up early, pack some snacks and hike up Lion’s Head as the sun comes up. It only takes about an hour and a half and the view from the top is well worth it.
6. Drink some wine, Ride a bike!
A bit of fun for the over 18’s. Saddle up and sip on some delectable wines and tasty cheeses as you peddle your way through the Cape Vineyards. What could be more fun than cycling with your other half or with some good friends as you enjoy some of the most spectacular wine estates along the Cape Wine Route! The best part is that you don’t have to own a bike, you can rent them on the day!

7. Test Your Smarts
Need something hilarious to do on a Thursday night? Head over to the Fireman’s Arms and show your friends once and for all that you truly are the smartest! For only R20 you can prove your skills and have a few drinks as you show your stuff. It’s time to have a load of laughs before the weekend has arrived.
8. Visit the World of Birds
Get your feather on and go check out 400 species of birds at the Hout Bay World of Birds. One of the most spectacular nature reserves you will ever see. Learn to appreciate these majestic winged wonders every Monday to Sunday from 8am to 5pm. Proceeds go to Animal Conservation, so get your holiday going butts to Hout Bay and support a good cause.

9. Honest Chocolate
Sweet indulgence on a budget? Now that’s what we are talking about! Pop in at Honest Chocolate on Wale Street in Cape Town for some insanely delicious sweet treats for under R50. Melt in your mouth muffins, cakes and various other goodies will have you smiling for the rest of the day.

10. Groot Constantia Wine Tasting
Take in the idyllic view and surrounds as you traipse through the Groot Constantia Wine Farm before enjoying some fabulous wine for only R50 per person (over 18’s only) for tasting. Soaked in history, the wine farm has been producing wine since 1685! There are two restaurants should you wish to spoil yourself with a bite to eat afterwards.

11. Catch a Movie, Old School Style
Renowned for its quaint charm, old school theatre and the fact that you can take your drink into the cinema with you. The Labia is simply one of those things you must do a few times in your life. At only R40 a movie, you can enjoy some independent, artsy films as you are whisked away into another world before your time.
12. Support Local Music
If you haven’t already, go and check out up and coming local bands at Zula Bar in Cape Town. The cost is no more than R40 as you enjoy some serious local talent on a Friday night. Packed with trendy students, this is the place to be to enjoy some great music and see what our musicians have to offer.
13. Rock Climbing at City Rock
For those adventurous types, head on down to the City Rock indoor climbing facility to break a sweat and have some fun! This is an activity for all ages as there are introductory classes for beginners most days in the week.

14. Pack a Picnic
With a student discount and fresh, luscious green hills, bubbling streams and gorgeous natural surroundings, Kirstenbosch Gardens offers some peace and tranquillity for the perfect picnic in the sun.

15. Visit the Promenade
Known as a hotspot for runners, joggers and dog walkers as well as some talented skate boarders and roller-bladers too, the Sea Point Promenade provides a myriad of activities to get fit along the beach front. Dust off your running shoes and take a late afternoon jog as you watch the sun set over the ocean.
